Review:
Dave “Baby” Cortez’s wildest, most intermittently compelling LP, Soul Vibrations essentially distills the various passages of the organ icon’s career into one far-reaching session–veering from smooth pop-soul to blistering funk to cosmic fusion and back again, the album succeeds in spite of its scattershot structure thanks to the remarkable soulfulness of Cortez’s playing. Recorded with arranger Sammy Lowe and a small group of otherwise anonymous session players, the album boasts a raw, unvarnished sound perfectly matched to its gutbucket grooves–cuts like “Funky Robot (Parts 1 and 2)” and “Tongue Kissing” push Cortez into strange new dimensions his previous records barely suggested, and while not everything here works, his playing is stellar throughout.
