The Godfathers Of Groove

''The Godfathers Of Groove Vol. 3''

Notes:
Label: 18th & Vine
Year: 2009

Review:
For their album 3, the self-proclaimed Godfathers of Groove mix it up a bit more within the soul-jazz arena, playing interpretations of pop tunes, some straight-ahead jazz, originals, and in essence the funky music that is at the core of their identities. Bassist Jerry Jemmott was the special guest on their previous album, but here it is the veteran jazz saxophonist Bill Easley, who plays on selected cuts with his usual professional verve, panache, and solid, fluid lines. Guitarist Grant Green, Jr. is coming into his own as heard more clearly, while organist Reuben Wilson and drummer Bernard Purdie continue to stake their estimable reputations on the chitlin circuit music they grew up with. When the band chooses to swing, as on the basic 12-bar groove "My Blues" with its fleet organ solo amidst Purdie's shuffle beat, or the straight-ahead, uncomplicated, and simple "Down Hill" with Easley's deft tenor leading the way, there's little stopping them. A very, very, very slow take of "Stella by Starlight" gives Green Jr. an opportunity to emulate his famous father's unmistakable snappy technique, pulled off the bone and well done. His singing, a bit gritty, crops up on versions of "Light My Fire" and "What's Going On," admirable but not a strong suit. Where Wilson shines is his ability to either shred solos and melodies, as on the head-nodding groove of the delightfully rendered "The Funkster" or on the solid-sending feed he provides during "Groove On" above Green's overdubbed guitar parts. Of course, there is no more readily identifiable drummer than Purdie when he shakes and bakes the clockwork rhythms of "Monkey Milk," in an Average White Band "Pick Up the Pieces" mode, or adds his personal and widely copied light contemporary funk to a modified version of "Autumn Leaves." Purdie also proves he can swing with the best of jazz drummers, an aspect of his personality and career not always given due credit. This is a good recording with many high moments, the GOG laying in wait to deliver their collective goods on the truly killer effort they are certainly capable of.
Review by Michael G. Nastos (AMG)

Editorial Reviews:
Purdie, Wilson, and Grant Green Jr. are back! 3 showcases a fresh approach to the soul-jazz genre while retaining their signature groove. Special guest Bill Easley adds an awesome dynamic to their sound!
* Bernard "Pretty" Purdie has played on over 4,000 records and is currently playing nightly on the Broadway performance of Hair, which has racked up eight Tony Award nominations to date.
* Features Bill Easley on saxophone. Easley is a renowned session player who has worked with Isaac Hayes, done sessions at Stax, and performed with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Benny Carter, George Benson, Jimmy Smith, Ruth Brown, Bill Mobley, Victor Gaskin, Mulgrew Miller, Ron Carter, and Grady Tate.
* Reuben Wilson invented soul-jazz, a style of flowing B-3 organ playing over smoking drums that inspired players like George Clinton and Sly Stone.
* As the son of legendary jazz guitarist Grant Green, Grant Green, Jr. was exposed to exceptional musicianship right out of the womb. Today, his style blends technical mastery with heartfelt soul, and it is this combination that sets him apart.
"If you have heard the earlier GOG album or have enjoyed the members individually in other combinations, you'll know that what you are getting. If, like my friend Ray, you are new to the group or even new to jazz, you could not find a better place to start. The Godfathers of Groove could be called the Mailmen of Groove because when it comes to the eternal verities, when it comes to swing and soul, they most surely deliver." -- Bob Porter

The Godfathers Of Groove ''The Godfathers Of Groove''

Some of the chunkiest, hardest-jamming soul jazz grooves this side of the JB's!" - BOSTON HERALD
Green, Purdie, & Wilson is an all-star group of jazz, soul, and funk veterans coming together to make waves! Led by legendary organist Reuben Wilson and jazz guitar legacy Grant Green Jr., the group presents infectious tracks with a fresh sound that appeals to both longtime fans and new listeners alike! In the late sixties, Hammond B-3 organist Reuben Wilson began the ascension to his current status as a godfather of acid jazz by demonstrating a command of funk that helped redefine the movement. As the son of legendary jazz guitarist Grant Green, Grant Green Jr. was exposed to exceptional musicianship right out of the womb. Today, his style blends technical mastery with heartfelt soul, and it is this combination that sets him apart. The "world's most recorded drummer," Bernard "Pretty" Purdie has worked with Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan, Isaac Hayes, Donny Hathaway, B.B. King, "Sweet" Loud Donaldson, Joe Cocker, Hank Crawford, and more, laying down the beat on over 3,000 albums to date!

Personnel:
Rueben Wilson (Hammond B-3organ),

Bernard Purdie (the consummate session drummer),
Grant Green Jr. (guitars and the son of jazz legend, Grant Green),
Jerry Jemmott (bass guitar).

Peterson, Brown, Jackson & Hayes ''Reunion Blues''

Last post in this batch is another Oscar Peterson album on MPS Germany.
The vinyl is in excellent condition and it would be rude not to share!

Review by Scott Yanow (AMG):
Pianist Oscar Peterson joins up with his old friends, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and bassist Ray Brown, in addition to his drummer of the period, Louis Hayes, for a particularly enjoyable outing. After a throwaway version of the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," the all-star quartet performs Jackson's title cut, Benny Carter's ballad "Dream of You," and four standards. Although not up to the excitement of Peterson's best Pablo recordings of the 1970s, this is an enjoyable album.

Info:
Janko Nilovic is a pianist, poet and composer extraordinaire from Montenegro who has lived in France since 1960. He is one of those musicians who devote themselves to music fanatically. This resulted in a great number of published works, but most of them are on library labels not available for sale. His opus stretches from Classical, Jazz and Funk to Pop, Psyche and Easy Listening. He touches all these styles in a characteristic way.
Soul Impressions is his funky instrumentals masterpiece! Half tracks on album are groovy killers! Including Blaxploitation style trilla-drivers “Hippocampus” and “Crazy Enterprise”!

Review:
The selection of material for Soul Power! was a little pop-oriented, including a few contemporary soul hits ("How Can I Be Sure," "Sunny," "Gimme Little Sign"), "Since I Fell for You," and Neal Hefti's ballad "Girl Talk," rounded out by Horace Silver's "The Preacher" and Richard "Groove" Holmes' own "Soul Power." There's not much that can be said about the performances that couldn't be said about numerous other soul-jazz sessions of the late '60s (many on the same label, Prestige). It's relaxed and funky, organ-paced small-combo music, Holmes perhaps breaking out less of a sweat than some of his more bop-influenced and frenetic contemporaries. The unexpected high point is the cover of the Rascals' "How Can I Be Sure." Far from being a routine run-through of a then-current pop hit, it has some compellingly stuttering, overlapping runs from Holmes and a swinging, tense rhythm backup. That rapid-fire style of organ reappears to a somewhat lesser degree in "Sunny," and for the most part the rest of the set is more in line with the routine Prestige soul-jazz product of the era. [All but one of the tracks ("Gimme Little Sign") were added to the 2004 expanded reissue of Holmes' 1967 album Super Soul as bonus cuts.]

Comment:
Following the success of Blue Lights in the Basement in early 1978, Roberta Flack released this self-titled album late that same year on Atlantic. It featured the single "If Ever I See You Again," written by Joe Brooks, who penned Debby Boone's massive hit "You Light Up My Life." The song peaked at No. 24 on the Pop Singles Chart, No. 37 on the R&B Singles Chart, and No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. Produced by Jerry Greenberg, Joseph Ferla, Joe Brooks, and Rubina Flake, the album reached No. 74 on the Pop Albums Chart and No. 37 on the R&B Albums Chart. "When It's Over" and "You Are Everything" reached No. 82 and No. 98 on the R&B Singles Chart, respectively.

Roberta Flack is the only album in Roberta's Atlantic catalogue that has never been reissued on CD in the US. Only available on compact disc in Japan for a time, it is now highly collectible in the CD format.

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

'' 'S Make It''
( LP Verve Records, 1964 )

Note:
A lost classic from Art Blakey – quite different from some of his Blue Note work! The album's a very swinging mid 60s session, noteworthy for the presence of John Gilmore, recording here in one of his few appearances away from Sun Ra. Gilmore wails on tenor, and he sounds great next to Lee Morgan, who had, at this point, briefly returned to play with Blakey, and fit in with the group beautifully. John Hicks is on piano, and contributes a few nice tracks – and Curtis Fuller rounds out the sextet nicely, hitting some of those great gutbuckety notes that he only ever seemed to manage when he worked with Blakey!...Dusty Groove

Crown Heights Affair ''You Don't Have To Say You Love Me'' 7''

Well I have been trawling through my files and came across this gem and thought I would share it You Don't Have To Say You Love Me.I purchased a lot of vinyl in 1979 but cannot think of a better album every track a winner,it brings back memories of Soul Nights at The Ilford Town Hall with our never to be forgotten friend DJ Froggy R.I.P.

Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Orchestra ''With Rhoda Scott''

Thad Jones Mel Lewis Orchestra With Rhoda Scott

Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra ''With Rhoda Scott''
(aka Rhoda Scott in New York with the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra) is a 1976 big band jazz album recorded by jazz organist Rhoda Scott with the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and released on the Barclay (France) record label.

Rhoda, born in New Jersey (USA) as a daughter of a priest in 1938, discovers her love for the organ very early. As a member of a gospel choir she even plays for services. A solid study of classical organ playing follows - the base for her later career. To earn some extra money she accepts jobs in night clubs where she first touches the world of jazz.

1968 Rhoda moves to France, the native country of her husband Raoul Saint-Yves. Concerts lead her through almost whole Europe. Her greatest successes are celebrated in Paris where a lot of wonderful recordings were made. The Barefoot Lady, how she is called due to here playing the pedal barefoot, is a great, a very great viruoso, has said Arthur Rubinstein.

Review by Richard S. Ginell (AMG):

Having long since established his funk credentials, Herbie Hancock continues the direction of Head Hunters and its U.S. successors here, welding himself to the groove on electric keyboards while Bennie Maupin again shines sardonic beams of light on a variety of reeds. In "Doin' It," the most successful track, Hancock makes a more overt bid for the dancefloor, for the tune is basically one long irresistible groove with a very commercial-sounding bridge. Again Hancock chooses to recompose one of his standards; "Cantelope [sic] Island" is almost unrecognizable converted into a sauntering, swaggering thing. A streamlining process has set in -- the drumming has been simplified, some of the old high-voltage drive has been muted -- yet there are still enough enjoyable, intelligently musical things happening here to hold a Hancock admirer's attention.

Biography:
Kai Chresten Winding (May 18, 1922–May 6, 1983) was a popular Danish born American trombonist and jazz composer. He is well known for a successful collaboration with fellow trombonist J. J. Johnson.
Winding was born in Aarhus, Denmark. In 1934 his family immigrated to the United States. He graduated in 1940 from Stuyvesant High School in New York City. His career as a professional trombonist began in 1940 with Shorty Allen\’s band. Subsequently, he played with Sonny Dunham and Alvino Rey, until he entered the United States Coast Guard during World War II.
After the war, Winding joined Benny Goodman\’s band, and later moved on to Stan Kenton\’s orchestra. Winding participated in the first of the Birth of the Cool sessions in 1949, appearing on 4 of the 12 tracks (while Johnson appears on the other eight, having participated on the other two sessions). In 1954, at the urging of producer Ozzie Cadena, he joined forces with Johnson to produce a highly successful series of trombone duet recordings, which were initially on Savoy Records and then on the Columbia Records label. While at Columbia, Kai experimented with different instrumentation in brass ensembles and also used a trombonium on at least one album that featured a trombone octet. Winding also arranged and/or composed many of the tracks he and Johnson recorded.

Biography by Scott Yanow (AMG):
One of the finest trombonists to emerge from the bebop era, Kai Winding was always to an extent overshadowed by J.J. Johnson, although they co-led one of the most popular jazz groups of the mid-'50s. Born in Denmark, Winding emigrated to the U.S. with his family when he was 12. He had short stints with the orchestras of Alvino Rey and Sonny Dunham, and played in a service band in the Coast Guard for three years. Winding's first burst of fame occurred during his year with Stan Kenton's Orchestra (1946-1947), during which his phrasing influenced and was adopted by the other trombonists, leading to a permanent change in the Kenton sound. He also participated in some early bop sessions, played with Tadd Dameron (1948-1949), and was on one of the Miles Davis' nonet's famous recording sessions. After playing with the big bands of Charlie Ventura and Benny Goodman, he formed a quintet with J.J. Johnson (1954-1956); the two trombonists (who sounded nearly identical at the time) had occasional reunions after going their separate ways. Winding led a four-trombone septet off and on through the latter half of the 1950s and into the '60s, was music director for the Playboy clubs in New York, and during 1971-1972 worked with the Giants of Jazz (an all-star group with Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, and Thelonious Monk). Although he recorded frequently both as a leader and a sideman throughout his career, most of Winding's sessions are not currently available on CD.
