Vincent Montana Jr. ''That’s What Love Does'' 12''

VincentMontanaJr-ThatsWhatLoveDoes

Vincent Montana Jr.

''That’s What Love Does'' 12''
FEATURING WILLIAM “SMOKE” HOWARD / MAXI-SINGLE (2006)

Note:
Is recommended to anyone who has never heard it but has even the slightest interest in the sound of 70's classic Philly Soul. Track #2, The original version of the song, Is a perfect example of Vincent Montana Jr’s expertise for the intricate crafting and production responsible for the lush background environment in many Philly classics by artists such as M.F.S.B, The Salsoul Orchestra, The Philly Sound Orchestra, The Montana Sextet and many others. The vocals are provided by William “Smoke” Howard whom was with Philadelphia International Records 70's group”The Ebonys“. Smoke’s vocals blend perfectly alongside the instrumentation with Montana on vibes which are crystal clear and right up out front of the track. Great mastering of a great tune long with remixes including an instrumental version & vibe solo.

Tracklisting:
1 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Club Vox)
2 – That’s What Love Does (Vincent Montana, Jr. Original Mix)
3 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Classic Dub)
4 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Reprise Dub)
5 – That’s What Love Does (Vibeapella)
6 – That’s What Love Does (Vincent Montana, Jr. Instrumental)
7 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Radio Edit)

Short comment:
William Howard, known as "SMOKE", a veteran performer, is a soulful entertainment messenger of "Life & Love". A native of Bristol, TN, "Smoke" formed the group "The Fabulous Nu-Tones" while in college and wrote and recorded their first release, "Our Love Was Destined To Be" / "I'm Not Worthy", on Vinyl while attending Tennessee State University. After college, his singing career took off when he led and managed a number of East Coast bands including South Jersey's "Black Smoke". Then, in the mid-1990s, "Smoke", as lead singer of The Ebonys, brought new life to the sound of Philadelphia with his rugged and powerful voice- slammin' the 90s with a dose of the great hits that made The Ebonys famous. His list of accomplishments also includes featured vocalist on "That's What Love Does" written and produced by Vincent Montana, Jr.; lead vocalist on Asphalt Jungle's Billboard charted single "Freakin' Time"; first class performer having shared the stage with such greats as Al Green, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Billy Paul, Chi-lites, Delfonics, Heatwave, Intruders, Ohio Players, Stylistics, Blue Magic etc; and now, solo recording artist.
Making his first trip to North Wales in the United Kingdom in October of 2009, "Smoke" did an impromptu performance of "That's What Love Does", a song that is well known on the UK dance scene. He returned to North Wales to do an encore performance in March, 2010, less than six months after his first performance.
"Smoke" resides in the Philadelphia area and continues to be active in keeping the sound of Philadelphia alive. He has completed his second solo CD entitled Give Me Your Heart.
Whether it be a funky, mid-tempo groove, a hip-hop inspired cut, or a heartfelt ballad, "Smoke" delivers, as only "Smoke" can, Smokin' Sounds With A Message You Can Dance To!!!

11) Ricky's Theme (03:44)
12) Transitions (02:35)
13) Drinkin' Wine (04:40)

Notes:
"The In Sound From Way Out!" is an album of instrumentals, many of which were originally released on the albums "Check Your Head" and "Ill Comunication".
The title and cover art concept were borrowed from the Perrey & Kingsley's album of the same name.
A testament to the talent of the Beastie Boys is that even a compilation of instrumental cuts, all previously released (although some admittedly on limited-run singles), could remain relevant to the music world. Not only this album is intriguing, but it could be argued to be the greatest statement of the threesome's musicianship. In their existence, the Beasties have transmuted themselves from a streetwise hardcore band, to a bratty white-boy rap collective, to a more sincere rap trio, to indie-funk-soul-punk-rap innovators.
These instrumental interludes started popping up in the last of these phases, and play like groove-funk soundtracks to '70s films that never were. From most artists, a collection such as this one would seem self-serving and pretentious, but these are the Beastie Boys!

Comments:
"Like Fred Wesley & The New JB's, Bobby Byrd, Marva Whitney or Maceo & The Macks in their day, the Mastersounds know groove and furrow it out like hogs on truffles." Jambase Review

"Here's a marriage made in heaven: The New Mastersounds with Dionne Charles." Mark Lamarr - BBC Radio Two

"There is a good reason why these guys are the daddies of the UK scene and it is all in this album. Soul, Afro-funk, New Orleans-Funk and one blinding piece of Soul-Jazz. Plug & Play is simply a non-stop party". Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show

"The New Mastersounds are an organ-heavy group from Northern England who are in love with old American boogaloo records of all stripes (jazz, soul, funk and whatever else gets you on the dancefloor). Beloved for their energetic live shows, the New Mastersounds are joined here (about half the time) by Dionne Charles, a ferocious R&B belter who triumphs on tunes like "All We Can Do" and "Looking For An Answer." While it may initially seem like the band's appeal is limited to mod-suited soul nostalgia, jam rockers, crate diggers and night clubbers will definitely dig the New Mastersounds". Chris Joss ''Presents Monomaniacs''

Note:
French multi-instrumentalist and music producer extraordinaire Chris Joss is back again with a new album Monomaniacs Volume 1. Like a long lost vintage LP plucked from a time capsule buried sometime in the 1970’s this album brings Joss back to a distinctly traditional and dusty funk groove. Recalling the iconic blaxploitation and grindhouse film soundtracks of that era, Monomaniacs is filled with ricocheting breakbeats, whirlwinds of wah-wah, rubber-band basslines, cosmic organs, and even a few shredding rock guitars to put some hair on your chest.

Biography by John Bush (AMG):
The female R&B quartet For Real formed in 1993, releasing their first album, It's a Natural Thang, one year later on A&M Records. Promoted by their inclusion on the multi-platinum soundtrack to the film Waiting to Exhale, the group moved to Rowdy Records in 1996 and released Free.

Review by Leo Stanley (AMG):
For Real's second album, Free, is an exceptional set of contemporary R&B that straddles the line between swingbeat and old-school vocal harmonies. Even when the songs are weak, the quintet sings with passion and conviction, making Free a joyous, infectious record.

Review:
Mandingo was Foday Musa Suso's band for this Afropop/dance/fusion album from 1985. Suso is a Mandingo griot, a hereditary musician from Gambia and master of the kora, a sort of African guitar that sounds a lot like a cross between a harp and a banjo. Here he plays the kora and several other instruments and sings, backed by African and non-African players of African and non-African instruments, including Herbie Hancock on keyboard for "Harima" and "Dewgal."
The music is lively and fun, even with what sounds like a drum machine banging away with the more traditional percussion. I'm generally not a big fan of this kind of hybrid, as the non-traditional part often clashes with the rest, but it works pretty well here. It's instantly accessible and infectious.

Review:
A fantastically funky full length set from Gizelle Smith -- a hell of a great singer who's really been winning our ears with her funky 45s -- now stepping out with an even more badass sound in the space of this album! Gizelle's groove is right up there with the hippest female singers in the deep funk underground -- and the backings by The Mighty Mocambos are forged in years of funky 45 experience -- razor sharp, with an especially great edge on the drums -- which seem to drive all the other instruments in the combo! There's no hoke at all in the production, either -- no fake-retro styles, just a clean, clear, classic approach to funky soul that makes the set an instantly timeless gem -- one of those records you could have picked up 30 years back, and will definitely be playing again 30 years from now. Titles include "Snake Charmer", "Coffee High", "Everything Holds Blame", "Gonna Get You", "Out Of Fashion", "Love Alarm", "Hold Fast", "The Time Is Right For Love", "Magic Time Machine", and "Nothing For Nothing" -- plus an instrumental of "Free Vibes".

Biography:
A multi-cultural, high-energy collective from Ottawa, Ontario, the Souljazz Orchestra -- featuring keyboardist Pierre Chrétien, alto saxophonist Zakari Frantz, baritone saxophonist Ray Murray, tenor saxophonist Steve Patterson, and percussionist Marielle Rivard, all of whom are also vocalists -- took root in 2002 and debuted with a fully developed sound that fused Latin and African jazz, funk, and Afro-Beat. The group’s first album was Uprooted, released in 2005 on the Funk Manchu label, but it was the overtly political 2006 single “Mista President,” off second album Freedom No Go Die (Do Right!), that really increased their audience, voted to the number nine spot in the 2006 Top 30 of BBC DJ Gilles Peterson's Worldwide program. Manifesto, the third Souljazz Orchestra album, was released in 2008. Two years later, they moved to the higher-profile Strut label for Rising Sun, another Peterson favorite.

Biography:
Illinois-born funk/soul guitarist Jesse Johnson began playing guitar when he was 15, honing his chops in local rock bands throughout his teens and early twenties. On a friend's recommendation, he moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he became the lead guitarist and a primary songwriter for the city's extraordinairy funk-rock group, the Time. After writing "Jungle Love," the group's most memorable and highest-charting single, Johnson signed a solo deal with A&M in 1984 and released Jesse Johnson's Revue the following year. Shockadelica and Every Shade of Love followed, building on the inventive, elaborate sound he forged with the Time. By 1990 the group reformed and issued Pandemonium, which once again showcased his songwriting and guitar skills. The highlights of his solo albums were collected on 2000's Jesse Johnson: The Ultimate Collection.

Review:
Mr. Johnson proves himself as a producer, song writer, arranger, musician, etc. on this album-even more so than on his first release. Even with this album, there was still the comparisions between he and Prince. And while some songs, in particular, "Addicttion" and "Burn You Up" sound like songs Prince would have composed, the vast majority of the album tends to veer away from this similarity. The song "Crazay" is an homage to old school funk-so it is very fitting that the legendary Sly Stone makes an appearance on this single. The song "A Better Way" is a blues-tinged track that showcases not only Mr. Johnson's guitar skills, but also his songwriting ability. It also gives a glimpse of the type of composition that would appear on his "Bare My Naked Soul"(1996)album. The acoustic "Black In America" is a well written reflection of the black experience in America. Other highlights include the hypnotic "Tonite", the danceable "She (I Can't Resist)", the reworked Pepe Willie song, "Do Yourself A Favor", "Baby Let's Kiss" and "Change Your Mind". I believe with Shockadelica, Mr. Johnson was beginning his evolution as an artist. An evolution that would come to fruition on his 1996 "Bare My Naked Soul" release.
