Review:
Very chic edge-of-disco funk, vindicated by the quality of songwriting, Bob Crewe has a heavy hand in things, roping a crop of the Los Angeles scene’s most respected session musicians (Cindy Bullens had recently worked with Elton John) to help. Initially most notable for the minor hit title track, Hollywood Hot, then got hotter once people discovered their version of Crewe’s own “Lady Marmalade” – a hit for Labelle, but here packing a vibrant funk rhythm lacking from the ladies’ gumbo monster. A pumped up cover of the Isley Brothers’ “It’s Your Thing” is also worth investigating.
