Review:
Electric funky Chico Hamilton! This one’s an oft-overlooked gem from the end of the 70s – a batch of sweet electric fusion tunes that sounds unlike anything else we can think of by Chico – with a cool and spacey sound that feels more like work coming out of Fantasy Records at the time, or CTI years before, than mainstream jazz on a major label! The album was produced by Wayne Henderson, and has a sweetly soulful quality that’s really great – adding in some backing vocals on a few tracks for a mellow, Henderson-esque soul approach – and going for some more full-on jazz grooving on other numbers. The set features lots of great guitar and keyboard work – still in the exotic rhythm progressions that you’d recognize from Chico’s earlier years, but given a great 70s electric twist! Tracks include “Mysterious Maiden”, “Alekasam”, “Nomad”, “Strut”, and “Magic Fingers”.
