Review:
This LP is one for collectors since it consists of historic tapes from Jerry Newman's archives. The live performances from the legendary Minton's Playhouse are listenable if not technically state of the art for the time but there are some valuable recordings. Trumpeters Hot Lips Page and Joe Guy are the main soloists, pianist Thelonious Monk appears on two songs and guitarist Charlie Christian pops up on the brief "Rhythm-A-Ning." Page is in fine form, making this an album for listeners interested in the roots of bop and wanting to get glimpses of what really went on at Minton's in the early '40s.
