Review:
Martino on the way up. Mostly quartet recordings for the brilliant guitarist. "Willow," a dark, understated gem. Contains seven tracks, three by Martino, three standards, and Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now." Guitar students should study this one.

Comment:
This record is special for me, because one of my all-time favourite tracks are found here:
Pat Martino’s version of Coltrane’s modal song ‘Impressions’.
I have listened many, many times to this version of Impression. Martino immediately sets the atmosphere with the stark moody intro. And then he drives his solos with impeccable technique and flow, and the true Martino jazz guitar sound.
He used really heavy gauged strings a distance from the neck (no rattling), and thick hard plectrums, all a part in creating this sound.
The song consists of only two chords, but it is still very difficult to improvise to this song, as it’s easy to run out of ideas and then starting to repeat oneself. But Martino knows everything about creating inversions and substitutions etc, to keep the flow all the time. Also great comping by the band.
Highly recommended!
