Review:
This 1968 album found the Memphis instrumental group running through the usual batch of then-current soul hit covers (”La La Means I Love You,” “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy”), pop tunes (”Eleanor Rigby,” “Foxy Lady”) and hits like “Hang ‘Em High” and the title track in their own trademark style. Most interesting are the tracks where Booker T. switches over to piano and the band suddenly becomes a very jazzy outfit, like “Willow Weep for Me” and “Over Easy.” One of the better albums in their discography.

Profile:
The legendary in-house band of the Stax record labels, formed 1962 in Memphis, Tennessee. The band’s name is a combination of organist Booker T. Jones’ first names and the acronym for Memphis Group, MG.
The other members are Al Jackson Jr. on drums, Steve Cropper on guitar and Lewis Steinberg on bass, who was replaced by Donald “Duck” Dunn in 1963.
As well as playing on and producing a stellar amount of records, working with artists like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Sam & Dave, they were successful as a band in their own right, with hits like Green Onions (1962) and Hip Hug-Her (1967).
The band was effectively disbanded in the early 1970s, when both Cropper and Jones had left the label. A planned reunion in 1975 didn’t happen, as Jackson was murdered in October that year. The three remaining members did reunite several times since the late 1980s, often with Jackson’s cousin Steve Potts serving as a drummer.
Booker T & The MG’s were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
