Review by C. Andrew Hovan:
While some might disagree, arguably pianist Herbie Hancock’s most memorable performances on tape would have to include his own Blue Note sessions and sideman appearances with Miles Davis. That is not to say that he’s done nothing of significance since the ‘60s, but for sheer mainstream brilliance nothing really comes close to Maiden Voyage or such Miles albums as Miles Smiles and E.S.P. Now for the first time, Hancock’s post Blue Note/post Miles work is the subject of an intensive retrospective that spans 13 years and samples music from 23 different albums recorded during Hancock’s tenure with Columbia Records.

Probably the most sensationalistic aspect of The Herbie Hancock Box is in the presentation. Literally housed in a clear Plexiglas box, each of four discs slides into grooves along the box’s sides, as does the accompanying booklet. The box I received as a review copy was pretty well marked and scratched due to the fact that the discs and booklet had come from their tracks and looked like they had been tossed around in shipping. As such, it might be wise to carefully examine the box before purchase to make sure everything’s intact.

The entire first and second discs are devoted to acoustic material, much of it featuring the VSOP line-up of Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. A good many of the performances have only been available in Japanese issues over the years and their appearance here is of note. The only thing one has to wonder is how essential these versions of such old favorites as “Maiden Voyage,” “The Sorcerer,” “Dolphin Dance” and “Eye of the Hurricane” are when the original incarnations are still available and often superior. Considering that Hancock and crew were former students of Miles Davis and that the Prince of Darkness himself was creating music far from the mainstream manifesto during the same period, the retro feel that dominates seems at odds with the Master’s teachings.

Disc three kicks in with a flowering of electronics and commercial sensibilities, although “Rain Dance” (from Sextant ) is an odd bit of dated material that almost sounds like the accompanying soundtrack to an episode of The Outer Limits. Also showing its age just a bit, the main theme from Hancock’s soundtrack music for Death Wish somehow gets one’s attention and whets the appetite for more, like a reissue of the entire album. In a bit of irreverent splicing, the pots fade up for a blistering and satisfying take on “Actual Proof” from the live Japanese session Flood, another album that sinfully remains out-of-print.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, the remainder of disc three and about half of disc four features Hancock’s commercial pratfalls from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Banal vocals on “Come Running to Me” and “Stars in Your Eyes” don’t even come close to being attractive pop hooks and they sure don’t funk out like Sly, The Meters, or Maceo Parker. Like his fellow Columbia label mate Freddie Hubbard, Hancock was stretching for something different and more often than not he missed. The remainder of disc four somewhat makes up for things in that “Rockit” and “Karabali” testify to the redeeming nature of Bill Laswell’s production values and the sense that Hancock had finally found his voice again amidst his electronic battery.

In the end, The Herbie Hancock Box brings to light some rare sides, a previously unissued performance of “Red Clay,” and a thorough re-examination of Hancock in the throws of some changing times. Completists will find it all well worth their time and investment, but those with only a marginal interest in Hancock’s later works would probably do better by picking up Headhunters or Future Shock.

The Herbie Hancock Box [Columbia] Review:
Solo whizzes like Michael Manring and Rob Wasserman aside, the most inspirational bassists usually share sonic space with great drummers, guitarists, horn players, keyboardists, or orchestras, whose talent and artistry help push our heroes to even greater heights. This undeniable fact is why the recent release of The Herbie Hancock Box is cause for celebration. No contemporary jazz artist has so consistently embraced the progressive nature of the genre, cutting a wide swath through every musical development of the late 20th century, and in the process employing and inspiring several of the world’s best bassists. The collection’s four discs are organized around major periods of Hancock’s unpredictable musical evolution. Discs one and two focus on his late-’70s acoustic material, particularly his super group VSOP with Ron Carter on bass. VSOP picked up where Miles Davis’s groundbreaking mid-’60s quintet left off; urbane harmony, loose structure, and muscular improvisation are the band’s trademarks. Carter is flat-out incredible; his near-supernatural chops, potent tone, and incredible sensitivity set a standard rarely matched to this day. Disc three is Paul Jackson’s realm. As a member of the Headhunters, Jackson was the fingerstyle-funk man. The greasy, probing lines he poured forth are best described by Hancock in the liner notes: “Paul Jackson is a genius. He always blew my mind.” CD three also features a lone Jaco Pastorius track, 1980’s “4 a.m.” It’s classic Pastorius, with his usual jaw-dropping 16thnote funk and deftly integrated harmonics. Disc four explores Hancock’s controversial forays into R&B, disco, and hip-hop. The annoyingly catchy “Rockit,” with Bill Laswell on bass, is a highlight, as is “Maiden Voyage/P. Bop,” featuring the one and only Bootsy Collins.

From Amazon (Review):
Since the 1960s, Herbie Hancock has been one of the major figures in contemporary jazz, even if his restless creative muse sometimes confounded his longtime trad-jazz followers at the same time it was winning him fans from other genres. The first half of this four-disc, 34-track career retrospective leans heavily on Hancock's musical foundations, as distilled through acoustic performances from the late '70s and early '80s (most of which have heretofore only been issued in Japan), many with his former Miles Davis Quintet sidemen-cum-jazz supergroup, V.S.O.P. (including Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Freddie Hubbard). Those performances (including the unissued Hubbard showcase "Red Clay") lay the groundwork the remainder of the anthology builds on, with Hancock's Fender Rhodes and synths surveying a rich landscape that spans a reinvented "Watermelon Man," the electro-funk workout "Chameleon," jazz-rock fusion, soul, world beat, and, of course, Hancock's most unlikely success, the 1983 hip-hop/industrial megahit "Rockit." Nods are also given to his intermittent film work, via the cool sophistication of his Death Wish title cut and his Academy Award-winning interpretation of Monk's "'Round Midnight." The packaging is nearly as innovative as Hancock's music: a transparent plastic cube with the discs and booklet (featuring insightful notes penned by Hancock himself) suspended within.

Joe Henderson ''The Blue Note Years'' (4 CDs Box Set)

Joe Henderson

''The Blue Note Years'' (4 CDs Box Set)

Review by Scott Yanow (AMG):
Unlike many other box sets currently available, this four-CD package is actually a sampler taken from Joe Henderson's many recordings for Blue Note; all but three selections date from 1963-69. Out of the 36 selections, 26 feature the great tenor as a sideman and some are from sessions not reissued in quite awhile. Henderson is instantly recognizable (his distinctive tone has not changed much since 1963) and an asset to each of these performances. Also included in the box is a very attractive 40-page booklet that is highlighted by his complete Blue Note discography. This set is particularly recommended to listeners only vaugely aware of Joe Henderson's powerful music.

Compilation: ''Passions Of A Man'' Charles Mingus 6 CDs Disc Set

Compilation:
''Passions Of A Man'' Charles Mingus 6 CDs Disc Set

PASSIONS OF A MAN includes every album Mingus made during his first tenure at Atlantic Records. These recordings include PITHECANTHROPUS ERECTUS, THE CLOWN, BLUES AND ROOTS, MINGUS AT ANTIBES, OH YEAH and TONIGHT AT NOON, a compilation of 1957 and 1961 sessions making its first CD appearance. Of the 6 disc set, the last disc is a 75-minute interview with producer Nesuhi Ertegun.

These are the complete Atlantic recordings of Charles Mingus from 1956-1961. He was with the label again for a second period from '73 until his death in '79; this set focuses solely on his groundbreaking first tenure. The resulting six CDs are a powerful portrait of a man taking in the world around him and turning it into compositions of timeless beauty, focused anger, quiet redemption, sad observations, and boundless hope.

Rooted in blues, gospel, Afro-American folk idioms, Dixieland, bop, and even modernist classical landscapes, Mingus was never short of confidence in and commitment to his vision. That he surrounded himself with such a gallery of monumental and innovative players is a testament both to his good taste and their desire to be a part of something this big and this perfect. Among others, his soloists include Bud Powell, Eric Dolphy, Roland Kirk, Jackie McLean, Pepper Adams, John Handy, and Mal Waldron. This is a colossal document, beautifully annotated and packaged, and a cornerstone of any jazz library.

Complete Atlantic Recordings 1956-1961

Recorded at Audio-Video Studios and Atlantic Studios, New York, New York; live at Nesuhi Ertugun's offices, New York, New York and at the Antibes Jazz Festival, Juan-les-Pins, France between 1956 and 1961. Includes liner notes by Andrew Homzy, Stefano Zenni, Joel Dorn, Tom Dowd, Sue Mingus.

PASSIONS OF A MAN: THE COMPLETE ATLANTIC RECORDINGS 1956-1961 was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Album Notes.Spin (1/98, p.88) - Ranked #8 on Spin's list of the "Top 10 Reissues."
Spin (1/98, p.112) - 9 (out of 10) - "...PASSIONS OF A MAN documents the moment when his whole conception came together--the avant-garde's expressive squawk and squeal, the virtuosity of the bop soloists who peopled whi bands, the raggedness of country blues, and the melodic and orchestral achievements of Ellington, his hero..."
Entertainment Weekly (12/12/97, p.88) - "...PASSION contains plenty of the lyricism, experimentalism, and hollering genius that made Mingus such a unique figure. Like the best such collections, it leaves listeners not overfed but hungry for more." - Rating: A
Down Beat (12/97, p.95) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...one can hear the mature Mingus driving various classic bands....the music on these records has been the object of constant analysis, review, critique and ponderment since it was waxed....it is a package absolutely packed with brilliant music..."
Vibe (12/97-1/98, p.172) - "...Mingus did work on his instrument that won't be duplicated until humans grow six extra fingers. PASSIONS OF A MAN is a splendid musical civics lesson..."
Musician (4/98, p.90) - "...a staggering array of saxophonists playing music that never, ever sounded like it was composed, orchestrated, and stomped upon by anybody but Mingus....As history, this is invaluable stuff....music like this can never lose its power or its passion."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.96) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "Besides oodles of great music, there's a CD devoted to a recorded interview with Mingus. Fascinating stuff."

( 12'' Disco Single, Passion Records, 1980 )
Catalog # LP 520559

B-Side of ''Roll-A-Rock''
Format:Vinyl, 12"
Country:US
Released:1980

Dr. York - Skateboarding had punk, roller skating had disco, hence roller skating is one of the most popular youth culture movements on the planet, with millionaire professional icons and an entire industry that feeds off of it, and skateboarding is a thing of the past, last practiced by Marty McFly as he escaped Biff the town bully.
This is Roller Skating's best song.
It was recorded by Dr. York, who is now doing 140 years in federal prison for a very unsavory conviction.

In 2002 York was arrested and charged with over a hundred counts of sexually molesting dozens of children, some as young as four years old. According to Bill Osinski, who wrote a book on the case: "When he was finally indicted, state prosecutors literally had to cut back the number of counts listed — from well beyond a thousand to slightly more than 200 — because they feared a jury simply wouldn’t believe the magnitude of York's evil. It is believed to be the nation’s largest child molestation prosecution ever directed at a single person, in terms of number of victims and number of alleged criminal acts."

The Pee Wee Russell Quartet With Marshall Brown

''Ask Me Now!''
( LP Impulse! Records, 1965)

Note:
Dixieland icon and all around unpredictable clarinetist Pee Wee Russell released his groundbreaking album Ask Me Now! in 1965. In much the same way that Sonny Rollins re-invented himself on The Bridge, by embracing the structural freedoms of avant garde jazz, Pee Wee Russell does much the same on Ask Me Now!. Wanting to distance himself from the traditional Dixieland scene that he had been part of all his life, Russell formed a small piano-less quartet, featuring valve trombonist Marshall Brown, to play modern jazz. Although the album is primarily a fairly straight ahead swinging affair rounded out by a few ballads, included are tunes penned by Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, and a fantastic cover of Ornette Coleman's "Turnaround". Ironically, this may be one of the most timeless sounding albums released by Impulse! (Amazon customer review)

01 - Turnaround

Comment:
A fresh look at the Blue Note catalog -- one that has a strong focus on electric funky numbers from the late 60s and early 70s! The package was put together by Ryota Nozaki of Jazztronik, and he's done a great job of finding some under-reissued gems and laying them out next to a few familiar numbers -- all in a blend that makes for a wonderful recasting of the Blue Note aesthetic! There's a few vocal tracks on the set, but most of the titles are instrumentals -- and the songs are all presented back to back, unmixed. Titles include "Off & On" by Moacir Santos, "Sunflower" by Alphonse Mouzon, "Uno Esta" by Bobbi Humphrey, "La Malanga" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Wipe Away The Evil" by Horace Silver, "Love's So Far Away" by Donald Byrd, "The Perfect Day" by Maxi Anderson, "You're Everything" by Carmen McRae, "Book Of Slim" by Gene Harris, "Let The Music Take Your Mind" by Grant Green, "Lamento" by Duke Pearson, "Congalere" by Horace Parlan, "Always There" by Ronnie Laws, and "If You Can't Handle It Give It To Me" by Lou Donaldson.

Comment/Note:
The liner notes that accompany this collection note that '70s soul music has never really gotten its due. One could argue that point for days, but hubris aside, there's no denying that Can You Dig It pays serious homage to the golden years of American soul. The new box set contains 6 CDs and 136 cuts, 65 of which hit the No. 1 spot on the R&B and/or pop charts. As you'd expect with a project that mines such a rich era (the CDs are compiled chronologically), it represents a who's who of stars. Among the notables: Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, the Spinners, the O'Jays, the Staple Singers, James Brown, Chairmen of the Board, Laura Lee, Freda Payne, and Jean Knight. Lesser lights also get to shine, i.e., El Chicano, who deliver the salsafied hippie anthem "Tell Her She's Lovely." But let's be honest-the selling point is the hits, and from the uplifting "Ooh Child" to the sassy "Want Ads," if you grew up in the '70s (hands up), then these tracks are beloved. Sure, the hard-core fan will probably wish for more obscurities, and the exclusion of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and George Clinton is troublesome, but anyone wanting an at-home jukebox loaded with classic R&B will certainly dig this.

Comment:
This is without a doubt, the best jazz funk compilation I've ever bought. I went after it because I wanted Ramsey Lewis's version of the Grover Washington, Jr tune, "Sassy Stew", featuring the legendary sax player himself. It appears on Lewis's 1982 live album "Live At The Savoy" but I couldn't find that on CD anywhere for love or money.
It's first-class stuff from beginning to end and while I had the vast majority of the songs on here on their original albums, it's so nice to have them all in one place. Besides, there are quite a few I didn't have, one of which is Norman Connors' "Black Cow", a beautiful song which hip-hop heads will recognise as the basis for the Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz 1998 smash, "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)".
They are all full-length versions too, which is very unusual, so you get the whole 8mins 42secs of Grover Washington, Jr's "Mister Magic" and all 13mins 27secs of Alphonse Mouzon's "By All Means", just to name two examples. The music is all very accessible so anyone thinking about getting into jazz (or anyone who just wants something to play when their jazz-loving friends come to visit!) will really find this one useful. I can't recommend it enough.
My only grumble is with the inner-sleeve notes, which are not entirely accurate. Some people take these notes very seriously and it's always better to say nothing than to disseminate misinformation. For instance, Marcus Miller is wrongly credited as playing bass on Bob James's "Westchester Lady" (though the actual player, Gary King, is correctly identified). Miller did not appear on "Three", the album from which the song came, at all. On the Alphonse Mouzon song I referred to earlier, the credits say Herbie Hancock played piano, keyboards and fender Rhodes with Mouzon credited as having played synthesizer, percussion and drums. In fact, on this particular song, Mouzon played drums, percussion, Fender Rhodes, electric piano, and ARP string synthesizer. Herbie Hancock played acoustic piano only.
To some these might be minor even irrelevant details but they matter greatly to others.
Still an excellent CD though. Five stars without any effort at all.
