Review:
Martino on the way up. Mostly quartet recordings for the brilliant guitarist. "Willow," a dark, understated gem. Contains seven tracks, three by Martino, three standards, and Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now." Guitar students should study this one.
By Michael G. Nastos (AMG)

Comment:
This record is special for me, because one of my all-time favourite tracks are found here:
Pat Martino’s version of Coltrane’s modal song ‘Impressions’.
I have listened many, many times to this version of Impression. Martino immediately sets the atmosphere with the stark moody intro. And then he drives his solos with impeccable technique and flow, and the true Martino jazz guitar sound.
He used really heavy gauged strings a distance from the neck (no rattling), and thick hard plectrums, all a part in creating this sound.
The song consists of only two chords, but it is still very difficult to improvise to this song, as it’s easy to run out of ideas and then starting to repeat oneself. But Martino knows everything about creating inversions and substitutions etc, to keep the flow all the time. Also great comping by the band.
Highly recommended!

THE PRESTIGE TRIO SESSIONS contains 2 LPs on 1 record set:
LITTLE BAREFOOT SOUL (1964)/CHUN-KING (1964).

Reviews:
This reissue combines two long-available Prestige LPs by Bobby Timmons, Little Barefoot Soul and Chun-King. The first date was actually the pianist's debut for the label, and it nearly didn't take place at all. A quintet session suddenly turned into a trio with bassist Sam Jones and Ray Lucas, the latter a last minute substitution on drums. Although Timmons' jazz immortality was assured with his earlier hit "Moanin'," most of the originals sound as if they were written shortly beforehand and were still evolving. The standout among them is easily
"A Little Barefoot Soul," a piece which gets underway without the leader at all. But its catchy gospel flavor eventually gives way to a driving, bluesy hard bop setting. Timmons' solo interpretation of the spiritual "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" is another gem. The later 1964 session matches Timmons with bassist Keter Betts and drummer Tootie Heath and draws from a much wider range of material. The opener, "Chun-King," was co-written by Betts with Charlie Byrd and features an extensive bass solo. Timmons contributed two compositions, the gospel-inflected "Getting' It Togetha'" (with the call and response played by the pianist alone) and the happy, strutting, and very oddly titled blues "Walking Death." Rounding out the date are some very familiar works, including the bossa nova " "O Grande Amour" and the standards "I Could Have Danced All Night" and "Someone to Watch Over Me." Timmons' fans will rejoice with the return of this long out of print music.
Ken Dryden

Wicked work by Bobby Timmons -- two albums recorded during a less-documented period in the life of this amazing soul jazz pianist, both of them killers all the way through! Bobby got his start in the group of Art Blakey -- where he first wrote some incredible soul jazz hits, and got the chance to record a number of mellower sides for Riverside. But by the time of these two albums -- Little Barefoot Soul and Chun-King -- Timmons' was one of the more free-thinking pianists in jazz -- still a soul jazz player who could groove like a mofo, but willing to stretch things out and mess up the groove a bit more than the rest. Both of these sides are trio ones, but that doesn't stop them from being as intense as any of Timmons' larger group sessions, as the interplay between bass, drums, and piano is incredible -- filled with fire, soul, and a sense of space that makes each note count a heck of a lot more than on some of the showier sides by other players. We love both of these records to death, and it's wonderful to have them together on one record set -- so that we can plug in, kick back, and listen to over 70 minutes of work by one of our favorite piano players ever! Titles include "A Little Barefoot Soul", "Chun King", "Walking Death", "O Grande Amor", "Getting It Together", "Ain't Thinkin Bout It", and "Cut Me Loose Charlie".

Review:
It’s often been said that if an R&B act didn’t have a lot of dancefloor appeal in the late ’70s, it could forget about being commercially successful. That isn’t necessarily true; Frankie Beverly’s Maze, just to give one example, was never a dancefloor favorite and yet, all of its late-’70s albums went gold. Nonetheless, having disco appeal certainly didn’t hurt. When Brainstorm’s second album, Journey to the Light, failed to sell, some people reasoned that it was due to a shortage of up-tempo material. So with its third and final album, Funky Entertainment, the Detroit band decided to go for maximum disco appeal and make up-tempo songs a top priority. While Journey to the Light was primarily an album for listening, Funky Entertainment is very dance-oriented. In fact, the ballad “You Put a Charge in My Life” is the only thing on the LP that isn’t aimed at the dancefloor. Obviously, Brainstorm was hoping for another “Lovin’ Is Really My Name” nothing on this LP is in a class with that hit, although exuberant tunes like “Popcorn,” “Hot for You,” and “A Case of the Boogie” are mildly catchy, if unremarkable and contrived, examples of late-’70s disco/funk. Funky Entertainment wasn’t a big seller, but it did enjoy some exposure in dance clubs. At the same time, there were die-hard Brainstorm fans who felt that by neglecting ballads, slow jams, and quiet storm material, the Motor City residents were selling themselves short creatively. And, to be sure, Funky Entertainment is the least-essential and least-memorable of Brainstorm’s three albums.

Review:
Our favorite kind of funk is Super Funk -- and this fab entry to the long-running series definitely keeps up the groove! As before, there's plenty of rare tracks here -- most pulled from obscure singles of late 60s/early 70s vintage -- and some even from rare studio tapes that were never issued at the time! Most tracks are short, with a nicely gritty groove -- the kind of funky 45 madness that will always keep us digging for rare 7" singles -- put together by the BGP crew with a real understanding of the groove! There's some especially nice female singers in the mix -- almost creating a mini Sister Funk focus on the package -- but there's also great guy singers and groups too. 20 tracks in all -- with cuts that include "The Sneak" by The Douzer, "Queen Of Losers" by Eleanor Rigby, "Groovy Baby" by Kim Tamanga, "It's Mookie Time" by Cleveland Eaton & The Kats, "Party Time" by James Carpenter, "Moving Woman" by 87th Off Broadway, "Bad Bad Woman (part 1)" by Marie Franklin, "He Say She Say" by Chet Ivey, "Cold Sweat" by Julio Zavalla, "Shakin Up The Nation" by The Radiations, "One Sweet Song" by Gloria Lucas, and "I'm Moving Home" by Mary Alice McCall.

Review:
This 1970 release by former Band of Gypsy's drummer Buddy Miles is, quite simply, one of the great lost treasures of soul inspired rock music. From the funky drive of the title track to Miles' plaintive singing on "I Still Love You, Anyway" and Greg Allman's "Dreams," the album is filled with the best qualities of both genres. Not only does Miles prove himself to be a great interpretor of songs, but with the title track and "Heart's Delight," he demonstrates his ability to write solid material on his own. Complimented by the Memphis Horns, Miles' songs soar and swing as hard as any Stax release, and his voice, underutilized when he played with the Electric Flag and Hendrix, combines the nuance of soul singing with the grit of rock. Them Changes is definately worth the extra effort to try to locate.

Review:
Although Buddy Miles' alchemical fusion of psychedelia, blues, and soul did not truly coalesce until his masterpiece Them Changes, his debut LP, Expressway to Your Skull, remains an inspired and original statement of intent, a record that's both timeless and an unmistakable product of counterculture consciousness. Each of the album's seven songs is a fascinating montage of sounds and styles acid-fuzz guitar collides with zig-zagging funk horns, and shrieking keyboards meet juke joint blues riffs head on. Not everything works a cover of Sam & Dave's "Wrap It Up" is more leaden than lively, and the instrumental "Funky Mule" feels like filler but the remaining material is brilliant, its twists and turns navigated by Miles' deeply soulful vocals and monster drumming.

Review :
The success of this project will make listeners wish jazz of this ilk had been more frequently released in nifty compilations such as this. It is like some kind of heat-and-serve DJ set, complete with a cover that looks like a hand-colored landscape shot from a '50s science fiction movie, perhaps "Invasion of the Bluesy Snatchers." A key part of the success of any compilation is to avoid the issue of quality through careful programming or some other inexplicable mojo. Since it is impossible for every track to have the same equal value, a compilation relies on charades, presenting an image of the epic and universal appeal of music as pure enjoyment, song to song, whether it is a genius leading the band or...well, Herbie Mann. It is surely no question of fame, since the latter artist was at least for a time the commercial equal if not the better of tenor saxophone genius Sonny Rollins, whose "Funky Hotel Blues" is the ultimate performance here. In terms of quality, comparing his improvisations with the flute wheezing of Mann is like comparing Chateaubriand with "hot 'em" burgers. Yet few listeners will probably bail out of the flutist's "A Sad Thing," possibly because there is a kind of intense happiness that comes from knowing it is the sole track by this Mann in the collection, but also because it is actually an effective, moody instrumental, and not the only one to be hampered not by the lack of a really good jazz soloist. Guitarist Mundell Lowe, who could always use some more recognition, becomes a champion by suggesting to his quintet "Let's Blow Some Blues." His playing is so strong that one imagines that if this performance had actually followed that of Rollins on a stage, nobody in the audience would have complained. There are many classic jazz players lurking in the wings as this collection of tracks unfolds. The first 13 and a half minutes would make a tremendous first act in a play, a loose jam on a tune by Gigi Gryce that is full of the marvelously happy spirit of hard bop.

Review:
One of the deepest-digging entries in the Super Funk series so far -- a blistering batch of underground singles that serve up some of the roughest funk of their generation! We'll be honest in saying that we'd only heard a few of the tracks here before -- and our hats are off to BGP for taking this already-great series and making it go even deeper -- far past familiar funk classics that usually get showcased on the label, and much more into the realm of the crate-digging underground, or the ebay-rarity stratosphere! A handful of cuts here are previously unreleased -- never even issued on wax back in the day -- and the rest are all pretty darn hard to find too, and all plenty darn great from a musical perspective. The package features a whopping 21 tracks in all -- including a rare 1970 funky remake of "Twine Time" by Alvin Cash, plus "Home Brew" by Miles Grayson, "Just Sitting" by Smithstonian, "Can't Get Enough" by 87th Off Broadway, "Hi Off Life" by Eternal Flames, "Give Me Another Chance" by The Uniques, "Hold On" by Lorenzo Holden, "Free The Soul Man" by La May & Company, "Little Boy Blue" by The Phillips Brothers, "You'd Be Good For Me" by Jeanette Jones, "Who Done It? Who Drained The Pool?" by Big Daddy Green, "Low Rider (Deuce & A Quarter)" by Smokey Wilson, "Can't Buy Soul" by Hebrew Rogers, "Shake A Leg" by Jackie Wilson, "Face To Face" by The Explosions, and "Turn Around & Go" by Lee Bernard.

Review :
This LP has material from 1961 that for no real reason went unreleased until 1985. One song, "Three Coins in a Fountain," is from the same session that resulted in tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's famous Workout session with guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The other five numbers -- three obscure Mobley originals, plus "I Should Care" and "Hello Young Lovers" -- are from the previously unheard December 5, 1961 session with the same personnel except for Green. Hank Mobley was in a prime period around this time, and all of his Blue Note recordings are well worth picking up.
