Review:
Night Crawler is a standard Stitt Prestige session, not to say a standard mid-'60s Prestige jazz session, as he heads a trio also including Don Patterson on organ and Billy James on drums. It's pretty short, too, clocking in at under half an hour. This is not so much soul-jazz as solid, unexceptional straight-ahead boppish jazz with organ, just two of the six numbers being Stitt originals. He swings pretty hard on the opener, "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm," in which Patterson takes his own solo, with a skittering intensity that makes it the highlight of the LP. The soul-blues element comes more to the fore on the title track, with its syncopated beat; a bit of Afro-Cuban tempo sneaks into "Star Eyes"; and the interpretation of the pop standard "Who Can I Turn To?" is the lone slowie on the disc. All of the material is included on the Prestige reissue The Boss Men, co-billed to Stitt and Patterson, as it also includes a Prestige LP recorded a few months later with the same personnel that was billed to Patterson (The Boss Men itself), as well as two cuts from the March 1964 session that yielded the Patterson LP Patterson's People, which also featured identical personnel.

is it me or is there a totally uncredited bassist here? or is it the very low end of the organ? :/
