The Godfathers Of Groove

''The Godfathers Of Groove Vol. 3''

Notes:
Label: 18th & Vine
Year: 2009

Review:
For their album 3, the self-proclaimed Godfathers of Groove mix it up a bit more within the soul-jazz arena, playing interpretations of pop tunes, some straight-ahead jazz, originals, and in essence the funky music that is at the core of their identities. Bassist Jerry Jemmott was the special guest on their previous album, but here it is the veteran jazz saxophonist Bill Easley, who plays on selected cuts with his usual professional verve, panache, and solid, fluid lines. Guitarist Grant Green, Jr. is coming into his own as heard more clearly, while organist Reuben Wilson and drummer Bernard Purdie continue to stake their estimable reputations on the chitlin circuit music they grew up with. When the band chooses to swing, as on the basic 12-bar groove "My Blues" with its fleet organ solo amidst Purdie's shuffle beat, or the straight-ahead, uncomplicated, and simple "Down Hill" with Easley's deft tenor leading the way, there's little stopping them. A very, very, very slow take of "Stella by Starlight" gives Green Jr. an opportunity to emulate his famous father's unmistakable snappy technique, pulled off the bone and well done. His singing, a bit gritty, crops up on versions of "Light My Fire" and "What's Going On," admirable but not a strong suit. Where Wilson shines is his ability to either shred solos and melodies, as on the head-nodding groove of the delightfully rendered "The Funkster" or on the solid-sending feed he provides during "Groove On" above Green's overdubbed guitar parts. Of course, there is no more readily identifiable drummer than Purdie when he shakes and bakes the clockwork rhythms of "Monkey Milk," in an Average White Band "Pick Up the Pieces" mode, or adds his personal and widely copied light contemporary funk to a modified version of "Autumn Leaves." Purdie also proves he can swing with the best of jazz drummers, an aspect of his personality and career not always given due credit. This is a good recording with many high moments, the GOG laying in wait to deliver their collective goods on the truly killer effort they are certainly capable of.
Review by Michael G. Nastos (AMG)

Editorial Reviews:
Purdie, Wilson, and Grant Green Jr. are back! 3 showcases a fresh approach to the soul-jazz genre while retaining their signature groove. Special guest Bill Easley adds an awesome dynamic to their sound!
* Bernard "Pretty" Purdie has played on over 4,000 records and is currently playing nightly on the Broadway performance of Hair, which has racked up eight Tony Award nominations to date.
* Features Bill Easley on saxophone. Easley is a renowned session player who has worked with Isaac Hayes, done sessions at Stax, and performed with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Benny Carter, George Benson, Jimmy Smith, Ruth Brown, Bill Mobley, Victor Gaskin, Mulgrew Miller, Ron Carter, and Grady Tate.
* Reuben Wilson invented soul-jazz, a style of flowing B-3 organ playing over smoking drums that inspired players like George Clinton and Sly Stone.
* As the son of legendary jazz guitarist Grant Green, Grant Green, Jr. was exposed to exceptional musicianship right out of the womb. Today, his style blends technical mastery with heartfelt soul, and it is this combination that sets him apart.
"If you have heard the earlier GOG album or have enjoyed the members individually in other combinations, you'll know that what you are getting. If, like my friend Ray, you are new to the group or even new to jazz, you could not find a better place to start. The Godfathers of Groove could be called the Mailmen of Groove because when it comes to the eternal verities, when it comes to swing and soul, they most surely deliver." -- Bob Porter

The Godfathers Of Groove ''The Godfathers Of Groove''

Some of the chunkiest, hardest-jamming soul jazz grooves this side of the JB's!" - BOSTON HERALD
Green, Purdie, & Wilson is an all-star group of jazz, soul, and funk veterans coming together to make waves! Led by legendary organist Reuben Wilson and jazz guitar legacy Grant Green Jr., the group presents infectious tracks with a fresh sound that appeals to both longtime fans and new listeners alike! In the late sixties, Hammond B-3 organist Reuben Wilson began the ascension to his current status as a godfather of acid jazz by demonstrating a command of funk that helped redefine the movement. As the son of legendary jazz guitarist Grant Green, Grant Green Jr. was exposed to exceptional musicianship right out of the womb. Today, his style blends technical mastery with heartfelt soul, and it is this combination that sets him apart. The "world's most recorded drummer," Bernard "Pretty" Purdie has worked with Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan, Isaac Hayes, Donny Hathaway, B.B. King, "Sweet" Loud Donaldson, Joe Cocker, Hank Crawford, and more, laying down the beat on over 3,000 albums to date!

Personnel:
Rueben Wilson (Hammond B-3organ),

Bernard Purdie (the consummate session drummer),
Grant Green Jr. (guitars and the son of jazz legend, Grant Green),
Jerry Jemmott (bass guitar).

Info:
Janko Nilovic is a pianist, poet and composer extraordinaire from Montenegro who has lived in France since 1960. He is one of those musicians who devote themselves to music fanatically. This resulted in a great number of published works, but most of them are on library labels not available for sale. His opus stretches from Classical, Jazz and Funk to Pop, Psyche and Easy Listening. He touches all these styles in a characteristic way.
Soul Impressions is his funky instrumentals masterpiece! Half tracks on album are groovy killers! Including Blaxploitation style trilla-drivers “Hippocampus” and “Crazy Enterprise”!

Review:
The selection of material for Soul Power! was a little pop-oriented, including a few contemporary soul hits ("How Can I Be Sure," "Sunny," "Gimme Little Sign"), "Since I Fell for You," and Neal Hefti's ballad "Girl Talk," rounded out by Horace Silver's "The Preacher" and Richard "Groove" Holmes' own "Soul Power." There's not much that can be said about the performances that couldn't be said about numerous other soul-jazz sessions of the late '60s (many on the same label, Prestige). It's relaxed and funky, organ-paced small-combo music, Holmes perhaps breaking out less of a sweat than some of his more bop-influenced and frenetic contemporaries. The unexpected high point is the cover of the Rascals' "How Can I Be Sure." Far from being a routine run-through of a then-current pop hit, it has some compellingly stuttering, overlapping runs from Holmes and a swinging, tense rhythm backup. That rapid-fire style of organ reappears to a somewhat lesser degree in "Sunny," and for the most part the rest of the set is more in line with the routine Prestige soul-jazz product of the era. [All but one of the tracks ("Gimme Little Sign") were added to the 2004 expanded reissue of Holmes' 1967 album Super Soul as bonus cuts.]

Biography by Scott Yanow (AMG):
One of the finest trombonists to emerge from the bebop era, Kai Winding was always to an extent overshadowed by J.J. Johnson, although they co-led one of the most popular jazz groups of the mid-'50s. Born in Denmark, Winding emigrated to the U.S. with his family when he was 12. He had short stints with the orchestras of Alvino Rey and Sonny Dunham, and played in a service band in the Coast Guard for three years. Winding's first burst of fame occurred during his year with Stan Kenton's Orchestra (1946-1947), during which his phrasing influenced and was adopted by the other trombonists, leading to a permanent change in the Kenton sound. He also participated in some early bop sessions, played with Tadd Dameron (1948-1949), and was on one of the Miles Davis' nonet's famous recording sessions. After playing with the big bands of Charlie Ventura and Benny Goodman, he formed a quintet with J.J. Johnson (1954-1956); the two trombonists (who sounded nearly identical at the time) had occasional reunions after going their separate ways. Winding led a four-trombone septet off and on through the latter half of the 1950s and into the '60s, was music director for the Playboy clubs in New York, and during 1971-1972 worked with the Giants of Jazz (an all-star group with Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, and Thelonious Monk). Although he recorded frequently both as a leader and a sideman throughout his career, most of Winding's sessions are not currently available on CD.

Comments:
Slow Drag was one of trumpeter Donald Byrd's final hard bop dates. Teamed with altoist Sonny Red, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Billy Higgins (who takes a surprise vocal on the title cut), this quintet outing features originals by Byrd, Walton and Red along with the standards "Secret Love" and "My Ideal." The music in general finds Byrd looking both backwards toward the blues and forwards toward modal music and hints of the avant-garde. A fine effort.

Beautiful stuff — and one of the best Donald Byrd albums of the 60s! The album is a killer all the way through — recorded with a group that Byrd maintained for 2 years, one that featured Sonny Red on alto sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums — all of whom come together magnificently in a razor-sharp formation, mixing hardbop and soul jazz with an edge that you’ll hardly find on any of Byrd’s other albums from the time. A lot of the credit is due to Sonny Red — who plays with a raspy tone that’s odd for the alto, and which really draws out Byrd’s solo skills. Walton’s got a heavy left-handed approach that really hits some great grooves — and the team of Booker and Higgins leap lyrically, yet also throw just the right amount of funk into the rhythms. Includes the Blue Break classic “Jelly Roll”, the amazing jazz dancer “Book’s Bossa”, and the sublime “Slow Drag”, one of the strangest groovers you’ll ever hear!

Review by Richie Unterberger (AMG):
Like many soul-jazz musicians, Melvin Sparks moved into funkier directions as the mid-'70s approached, whether out of pressure from marketing trends, a desire to explore that area, or both. As such efforts go, Texas Twister is a decent one, though not innovative or tremendously exciting. Working as the leader of three different configurations of musicians varying in size from a trio to a ten-piece, Sparks wrote about half of the material and took all the guitar solos, though Ron Miller also played guitar on three tracks. The cuts with the larger band tend to be the funkiest, the group playing with real pluck on "Whip! Whop!" But elsewhere, they lean toward a more straight-ahead soul-jazz direction, with "Judy's Groove" setting a nice swinging, walking beat. "Star in the Crescent" is an effortless throwback to the classic, more bop-driven '60s soul-jazz style, Sparks peeling off some fluid lightning riffs and giving plenty of space to Idris Muhammad's drums and Caesar Frazer's skittering organ. Texas Twister was combined with the 1975 LP '75 on a single-disc CD reissue.

Michael Falkenstein 4 CDs Courtesy of Lupo!

Michael's way as a Hammond freak and a professional was determined by his father's activities who has been involved in the service business for electronic instruments. In 1982, he opened a Hammond studio in which Michael, as a youngster, was allowed to present Hammond instruments. This was a unique chance to play and teach himself. Very quickly, he adopted famous organ players like Jimmy Smith, Curt Prina or Wild Bill Davis.
The Hammond became his passion. "A Hammond sticker was worth a whole bunch of bills", he says. Just turned 15, he performed for the first time. In the years to follow, Michael had some excellent chances to meet artists who gave him decisive impulses for his further career: James Brown and Jimmy Smith. James dubbed him "Prince of Soul on the Hammond-Organ".
Michael's business today is the Hammond. He is the general sales manager for Hammond Suzuki in Germany, Austria and some East European countries.

Michael Falkenstein started at the age of four years with the game of keyboard instruments. He was inspired by his parents.
Since 1992, Falkenstein worked as manager of the Hammond company for the German speaking countries. 1995 Michael Falkenstein met in Montreux for the first time with the "King of Soul" - James Brown - together, who in 1998 visited in person at the Hammond organ studio of his parents during a concert in Frankfurt on the "Prince of Soul" hit.
Michael Falkenstein sees music as a part of life, as a universal language. Its aim is to create understanding between diverse people. He loves to extremes to keep one another. He wants to show that it is possible through understanding, respect, respect for and interest in the thoughts and feelings of others formed friendship.

Lupo's comment:
Today I'd like to introduce a German Hammond player: Michael Falkenstein.
Not all of his CDs are jazzy or funky, but nevertheless it's interesting.

Lonnie Smith ''Jungle Soul''

Lonnie Smith

''Jungle Soul''
(Palmetto Records, 2006)

Comment:
On Jungle Soul, the great organist and his quartet -- Peter Bernstein on guitar, drummer and percussionist Allison Miller, and rhythm guitarist/producer Matt Balitsaris -- tackle some jazz standards -- "Bemsha Swing," "Willow Weep for Me," and Eddie Harris' bona fide soul-jazz classic "Freedom Jazz Dance" -- and place them against Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man," and a handful of Smith originals and come up with a stunner. Palmetto Records 2006.

Tracklisting:
1 Trouble Man
2 Simone
3 Jungle Soul
4 Willow weep for me
5 Freedom Jazz Dance
6 Blue Moment
7 Witch Doctor
8 Bemsha Swing
9 Zimbabwe
10 Jungle Wisdom

Review from All About Jazz:
Hammond B-3 master Dr. Lonnie Smith returns with a soulful, funky session of straight-ahead grooves and smoldering moods on Jungle Soul. After a series of focused tributes to individual musicians (John Coltrane , Jimi Hendrix and Beck , respectively), this release finds the good doctor drawing from classic and original source material for an enjoyable theme ride through the proverbial dark continent.
Joined by a stripped-down organ combo lineup of guitar and drums, Smith charts a course of smoldering intensity. Guitarist Peter Bernstein works with Palmetto Records producer Matt Balitsaris , who plays rhythm and acoustic guitar here. Both players hold forth with a bright, clean tone and sinuous linearity, matching Smith's rumbling undulations with their own searing highs. Up and coming drummer Allison Miller demonstrates ambitious creativity and excellent chops on a session full of subtle surprises. Whether locking into straight-ahead swing grooves or mimicking entire African drum choirs, Miller never falters.
From the easy going blues grooves of "Trouble Man" and "Simone" to the sultry funk grind of "Witch Doctor" and manic thrill ride of "Zimbabwe," Smith and his cohorts pilot a journey through scenic terrain. The tender ballad "Blue Moment" finds Smith at his most dulcet and reflective, while "Jungle Wisdom" reveals a more experimental side as he plays pneumatically, generating marimba like tones from his B-3. Miller sets up a barrage of percussive effects, emulating multiple hand drummers with polyrhythmic flair.
Smith takes a laid-back approach overall, with only a moment or two of relative abandon. Breathing fresh life into a regal chestnut like "Willow Weep for Me," Smith ratchets up the intensity level in a boisterous, rambunctious solo of gospel-like intensity. Other standards receive a similarly unique treatment. "Bemsha Swing" oozes darkness, played with gauzy chording and a slinky tempo, while "Freedom Jazz Dance" takes on an Africanized sheen, complete with funky, modulated polyrhythmic effects.
As jazz records go, Jungle Soul qualifies as a perfect summer album. While it may be enjoyable in the light of day, its smoky, dark ambience lends itself perfectly to late night moods.

Comment:
An amazing bit of jazz funk from Johnny Hammond -- and one of his greatest LPs! This is the first album that Johnny recorded with Larry Mizell, cut right before the pair of them went onto do the landmark Gears album. While this one never became as famous as Gears, it's got some fantastic moments that are every bit as great -- a perfect blend of Mizell's spacey fusion and Hammond's fiercely soulful soloing, with lots of great jazzy changes to keep the pace fresh throughout. Includes the great spacey jazz cuts "Star Borne" and "Yesterday Was Cool", the latter of which is an excellent piece of work by Larry Mizell -- plus the cuts "Back To The Projects", "Gambler's Life", "Rhodesian Thoroughfare", and "Virgo Lady". Plus, the CD features 4 bonus tracks that represent some of Johnny's best work for the Kudu label -- including "Rock Steady", "Higher Ground", "Breakout", and "Who Is Sylvia".

Review:
A sweet album of funky guitar tracks, with Freddy Robinson out front over a bunch of tight LA Monk Higgins arrangements. Kind of a sleeper that hasn't really gotten as many props in the groove scene as it ought to, with a great sunny west coast 60s soul jazz vibe running throughout. Joe Sample provides warm keys, Paul Humphrey is snapping nicely on the drums, and the group kicks on tracks like "Before Six", "Black Fox", and "Monkin Around".
