Biography:
Candido Camero (born April 22, 1921) is a Cuban-born percussionist (mainly Conga and Bongo) who backed many Afro-Cuban and straight-ahead jazz acts starting in the 1950s.
Early on he recorded in Cuba with Machito. He moved to New York in 1952 and started recording with Dizzy Gillespie. During 1953-54 he was in the Billy Taylor quartet and in 1954 he performed and recorded with Stan Kenton. He also enjoyed some hits during the disco era, most notably with Babatunde Olatunji’s classic “Jingo”, which he recorded for Salsoul Records.

Kongas is a European group that at times can be compared to Barrabas, but with much fiercer percussion.
“Anikana-o” is jungle-like and oh so primitive. All with a little help from Alec R. Costandinos on writing (A1 and B1) and Cerrone. It’s remixed for this Salsoul release by Tom Moulton.

When Instant Funk moved from Philadelphia International's TSOP label to Salsoul, all of the pieces fell into place for the band -- both commercially and creatively. While its first album, Get Down With the Philly Jump, was decent but uneven, its second and third albums were generally excellent. For Instant Funk, switching labels didn't mean switching producers -- the Philadelphians worked with Bunny Sigler at TSOP and continued to work with him at Salsoul. Sigler was the ideal producer for Instant Funk because he really understood what the band was going for: an unorthodox blend of Philly soul/disco and the type of hardcore funk that other cities were better known for. Sigler is a major asset on Witch Doctor, which was Instant Funk's second album for Salsoul and its third album overall. From the sweaty funk of "Bodyshine" (a major hit), "Slap, Slap Lickedy Lap," and "Witch Doctor" to the smooth ballad "I Had a Dream," Sigler does right by Instant Funk on this solid effort. From the disco era to the 21st century, critics of dance music have often accused it of being mechanical and robotic. To be sure, this has been true of some producer-driven dance recordings, which might grab you with an infectious beat but are lacking in soul, warmth and vocal personality. However, a lot of dance music has been full of warmth and feeling, and Claudja Barry is a prime example. The singer’s promising debut album, Sweet Dynamite, was a major hit in clubs, but all of the material holds up nicely away from the dance floor. None of the songs come across as mechanical or insincere, and Barry is as soulful on the haunting, European-flavored “Love for the Sake of Love” as she is on the exuberant “Why Must a Girl Like Me” and the gritty title song, which has as much to do with soul and funk as it does with Euro-disco. Though Barry’s vocals are the album’s main focus, she lays out on “Live a Little Bit,” an infectious instrumental that successfully fuses Euro-disco with African pop and reggae. Produced by Jürgen S. Korduletsch, this promising debut went down in history as a true dance classic and is among Barry’s most essential albums.

On their second album, the Salsoul Orchestra enhance the appeal of their string-heavy soul sound by marrying it to a series of tight, hook-laden tunes. The overall feeling of Nice ‘N’ Naasty is very ‘up’ and the album prominently features a number of high-energy tracks tailored for the dance floor. In fact, the album contains of two of the Salsoul Orchestra’s best-ever uptempo tracks: “It Don’t Have To Be Funky” moves forward at a double-time speed thanks to a combination of frenetic drumming and an infectious rhythm guitar riff while “Don’t Beat Around The Bush” layers the rhythmic, sexy chant of the title over a huge-sounding, thickly-layered drum beat that sounds like it was lifted from a glam rock record. Another uptempo highlight is “Salsoul 3001,” a dance floor stormer that brings “Thus Sprach Zarathustra” into the disco age by marrying its dramatic melody to a frenetic groove anchored by some furious conga drumming. Nice ‘N’ Naasty also improves on the group’s debut album by downplaying the easy listening excesses that marred that album: even on soft tracks like “Nightcrawler,” the musicians add a rhythmic touch that keeps the album’s overall groove moving forward. In fact, the only time Nice ‘N’ Naasty slides toward easy listening is during the “We’ve Only Just Begun/Feelings” medley, but even that is saved by a clever arrangement that highlights some some lovely vibes work by Vincent Montana. Overall, Nice ‘N’ Naasty’s combination of solid tunes and tight performance make it the Salsoul Orchestra’s most consistently entertaining album and a good choice for disco fanatics.
