Review (from ”The Incredible Jimmy Smith” site):
Here, for the first time, the big band sound really gels with Jimmy’s soulful groove. Arranger Oliver Nelson has altered the band’s colouration to a bluer, gutsier tone that suits Jimmy down to a tee. Better still, this is the first full set of Jimmy-with-big-band tunes, which means not only more powerful and dynamic music but also, and this is the one you’ll want to remember, it means that no one else gets to solo: that space is taken up entirely by Jimmy. And about time. So, all the ingredients are now here and it’s time for some cooking. Listen to him go! The bluesy opener and a swinging take on Horace Silver’s The Preacher are the stand outs here.
