Review:
One of the rarest of all Cedar Walton albums — and a totally tight set of soul jazz groovers that’s very different than most of his other work! The album feels more like a hard Blue Note session from the mid 60s — ala Lee Morgan or Horace Silver — than it does Walton’s usual work, and it features a tight straight quintet that includes Blue Mitchell, Clifford Jordan, Richard Davis, and Jack DeJohnette. Walton’s writing is impeccable, and recalls his early work with Art Blakey — especially on the groovers “Higgins Holler” and “Jake’s Milkshakes”. Great stuff, and quite tough to find on vinyl!
