Review by Scott Yanow:
The Latin Jazz Quintet, under the direction of conga player Juan Amalbert, is best-known for backing (and often ignoring) Eric Dolphy during two sessions during 1960-61. This CD reissue, which contains music originally released on two LPs, gives the group an opportunity to star. Their brand of bop-flavored Latin-jazz is pleasing if often bordering on easy-listening. In addition to the leader, this release features altoist Bobby Capers, (on half of the numbers), vibraphonist Willie Coleman, either Jose Ricci or Artie Jenkins on piano, bassist Bill Ellington and Phil Newsom on drums and timbales, giving one a good example of their music.
