Review:
Fantastic work from Bong Penera a pianist who might well be called the Sergio Mendes of the Philippine jazz scene of the 70s! Like Sergio, Bong's got a style that's breezy, jazzy, and filled with bossa influenced and like Sergio in the 70s, Bong's working here in a mode that brings together acoustic and electric instrumentation with a heck of a lot of soul using vocals on most of the jazzier cuts, and going for a style that's clearly influenced by the rhythms of Brazil, but inflected with the warmth and sunniness of the 70s LA scene! Lyrics are often in English, and sung either by Bong or female singer Mila Garcia in a sensitive, gentle style that works wonderfully with the light rhythms of the set. All the tunes are originals, and pretty darn fresh and titles include "Samba For Luisa", "Batucada Sa Calesa", "Amanda's Theme", "Go", "Tell Me", "Valse Nova", "Imee", and "Two Themed Samba".
